Cortus、Höganäs

Höganäs and Cortus Energy take the first step in reducing CO2 emissions

Today Tuesday, Fredrik Emilson, CEO Höganäs AB, and Rolf Ljunggren, CEO Cortus Energy AB, put the spade in the ground for Sweden’s and the world’s first plant for renewable energy gas and green coke. The goal is to transform biomass into renewable energy, which can be used in the iron and steel industry. For Höganäs, CO2 emissions can fall by about 10,000 tonnes per year.

The search of renewable alternatives to replace fossil fuels that reduce CO2 emissions and that works in iron and steel production has been going on for a long time. Climate impact in industry is directly linked to the process and the solutions available today are fossil – coal, oil and natural gas.

But now there is a renewable solution in sight. In project Probiostål, the industry and academy have joined forces to investigate the possibilities of producing renewable energy, using Cortus Energy’s unique biomass gasification process WoodRoll®.

“For Höganäs, it is part of our long-term strategy to switch from fossil to renewable energy. To succeed, we must engage, invest resources and take the lead in exploring new opportunities,” says Nicklas Lång, Sustainability Director at Höganäs.

Biomass for demanding industrial processes

With Cortus Energy’s technology, biomass is gasified to energy gas and green coke, both energy can be used in Höganäs metal powder production. The first industrial facility with Cortus technology, now being built in Höganäs industrial area, will be connected to one of the production furnaces and tested under real conditions.

“We are very pleased to be able to build WoodRoll® in an industrial scale together with Höganäs AB and look forward to verifying the good results that previous tests have shown. The facility in Höganäs will be a milestone for our company and a platform to offer WoodRoll® as a solution to the necessary switch from fossil to renewable energy, not just in industry but in a variety of segments”, says Rolf Ljunggren, CEO Cortus Energy.

The plant will be put into operation during the first half of 2018 and tested in Höganäs production. If tests show positive results, the WoodRoll® will start regular deliveries of renewable energy products in 2019. This will then be a breakthrough for gasification of biomass to generate renewable energy for demanding in industrial processes in Sweden.

Financing is based on contributions from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and Energy Agency, Höganäs AB, industrial partners, natural resources (in), banks and equity. Cortus will lead the implementation. Other players contributing to Probiostål are ABB, Calderys, SSAB, Sveaskog, Södra and Outokumpu. KTH and Swerea will evaluate real results in relation to previous theoretical studies that are published in 2015 and 2016.

Facts / Probiostål
Probiostål was started in 2014 with a preliminary study in which academia and industry participated. The purpose was to investigate the possibilities of producing renewable energy on a commercial scale for use in Höganäs metal powder production.
